What is HTTPS?

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure is a special type of HTTP that securely transmits data from a web browser to a web server. It enables encrypted communication between the two. HTTPS uses Transport Layer Security protocol or its predecessor Secure Sockets Layer to encrypt

HTTPS is often used to create a secure channel over an insecure network, like the Internet. A lot of traffic on the Internet is not encrypted and open to sniffing attacks. HTTPS encrypts sensitive information, which makes a connection secure.

HTTPS (secure) pages show the ‘https’ prefix in the browser’s address bar. Most browsers also display a lock to indicate that you are on a secure page.
